Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Do you know the warning signs of elder abuse, especially when a loved one is living with dementia?
Today, on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we urge everyone to become more vigilant. Individuals with dementia are at a heightened risk, as cognitive changes can make them unable to report mistreatment or even recognize it.
Look out for unexplained injuries, sudden emotional shifts, unusual financial activity, signs of neglect like poor hygiene, or overly controlling caregiver behavior. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.
If you think someone you know is being abused — physically, emotionally, or financially — talk with them when the two of you are alone.
Many local, state, and national social service agencies can help. These include:
- Adult Protective Services – https://www.napsa-now.org/ or by calling 202-370-6292.
- The National Center on Elder Abuse – https://acl.gov/programs/elder-justice/national-center-elder-abuse or call 855-500-3537.
- Long-term care ombudsmen- https://theconsumervoice.org/ or by calling 202-332-2275.
If you think someone is in urgent danger, call 911.
At Amicus Brain, we empower caregivers with knowledge, and part of that is recognizing vulnerabilities and knowing where to turn for help. Learn more about supporting loved ones at www.amicusbrain.com.
